There's more news about Metsamor (the nuclear power plant that everyone - except Armenia - wants closed down).
Prime Minister Markarian said today that Metsamor "will work until alternative sources of energy are found". He was talking about the EU offer to give 100 million Euros towards the closing of the plant. He said that this amount was not enough for Armenia to close the plant and develop alternative sources of energy. That goes without saying, but do we expect the EU to fund these alternative sources of energy?
Last week, of course the EU announced it was withholding 100 million Euros in grants.
Surely the EU doesn't have a coherent policy. Armenia does, and this is to use Metsamor until they have secured other forms of energy or until there is enough aid money to develop the existing hydro plants, but that is a long way off.
