EU launches IT development project in Armenia

The project, which is to be completed in 2005, costs 1.2mln EUR. It has two components: training and retraining of personnel and the drafting of necessary laws. The Armenian office of the European Institute of Information Technologies is in charge of personnel retraining. The main task of this component is strengthening of Armenian companies' ties with their European partners, which will allow Armenia to be turned into a regional center of information technologies. The European Commission will provide necessary equipment for this purpose. The training program envisages the elaboration of three subprograms: software development, IT business management and strengthening of ties with the mass-media. Among the expected results are also the elaboration of the Bachelor's and Master's degrees educational programs in IT. A training center for lecturers and school-teachers will also be established. Laws aimed at developing Armenian IT industry will be adopted.
