Marco Grigor dies
Marco Grigor(Marcos Grigorian), the well known Armenian-Iranian artist died in yerevan yesterday. I have not seen any armenian news website covering his death.
He is considered a pinonner of modern Iranian art. He organized the the first Tehran Biennial.
Mraco was enthusiastic for iranian local popular culture, including coffee-house paintings, a type of folk art named after the locations in which they were often displayed.
Before Iranian revolution,he immigrated to united states but then he moved to Armenia.
The Iranian news agencies reported he was 82 and he died while talking to his niece.
He was badly beaten a few days ago in Yerevan by thieves and was hospitalized.
some of his work can be seen in this website

I can’t believe that Marco has died in this manner. Tragic. In the 1990’s when we visited him frequently at his Gorky Gallery in NYC he was so determined to open a museum in Armenia and move his art collections there.
I feel so badly for falling out of touch in the intervening years and there was still so much to say to him. Always hoped to visit him in Armenia to see what he had built and now it can’t be. I hope the people that did this to him are caught and punished and realize what a comfortable life he left behind so that he could help to move Armenia forward.

To my dear Uncle Marco rest in peace and know that you will not be forgotten. Last I spoke to him this year was before he left for Armenia. We talked that we will get together in November. I also can’t beleive that he has died in this manner. I thank Ken for his comments and making the same wish that the people that did this to him will be caught and punished.

I am not familiar with Marcos Grigorian’s work but it was shocking to learn the manner he died. There was a very good editorial in Aravot mourning his death.
RIP.

The last issue of Hetq (www.hetq.am) has a few articles about his life and passing both in Armenian and English.
