Wimax - A Reality!?!?
Wow! I spoke of my dream of having Armenia covered by a technology such as wimax which is a long range computer networking technology. In short, it is like taking your current home wireless router and giving it 10,000 times more power. Today, Cornet seems to be announcing plans to move head with wimax installation.
The financial implications for Armenia are outstanding! If internet and networking becomes cheap, think of the educational opportunities alone that could be implemented to help those in rural regions improve their education.
If Armenia is to move to a sustainable economy and compete on the international stage such as Singapore or Luxembourg, internet is a prerequisite! I applaud Armentel’s new owners for seeing that by opening the internet flood gates and handing over the monopoly, Armenia will be a richer long term market. With any luck, this will become a trend with the monopolists but I doubt our lovely oligarchs are quite that forward thinking. Anyway, here is to an Armenia that is blanked with wimax internet technologies in the coming year!

This is actually one of those very rare good news i’ve been hearing since the start of this year. I am especially glad to know, that its Cornet doing it, which has substantial Russian investment, and which will actually deliver on its promises, unlike Arminco, which always makes big announcements, does the first step and halts at that level because of lack of enough investments.

If DSL is so bloody expensive, can you imaging how expensive this is going to be? The network might be there, but note, from the interview, they’re directing the service towards corporate clients and most probably banks.
But anyway, might as well get excited about it until we discover that it won’t benefit anyone other those clients.

Agreed the focus will be to the businesses, mainly financial and IT companies, but long term profit comes from the little guy as the big guy does not want to pay. For example, a company that I cannot name at the moment is one of the worst at paying their bill and most of my companies have gone to a cash only delivery rule. Cornet and others will find that it is only the Armenian middle class that actually pays the bill. The ends do not wish to pay or are not able to pay. Lets hope they realize this!
