Eurovision Song Released - Azeris Angry!

Filed under: Armenia — Posted by Harmick on March 16th

So here it is! “Without Your Love” , Armenia’s first ever entry into the Eurovision song contest was premiered on Armenian Public TV - H1 yesterday at 21.25 Yerevan time- straight after the main news bulletin “Haylur” - After the premier, numerous Armenian popstars gave rave reviews to the track, claiming it a winner.

So whats the verdict at Blogrel?

Obviously the writer wanted to convey Armenian culture, tradition, and “soul” through a 3.5 minute track- the song crams practically every Armenian element of music in, and is a very melodic and dancable track. As I suspected, we are let down by the lyrics, and Andre’s accent is very strong. “What I say, what I hide” sticks out like a sore thumb and it’s a shame they werent checked.

One non Armenian person I spoke to claimed it perhaps sounded Turkish - an opinion I hope wont be assumed by everyone who hears it -

I think what gives it that flavour is the clarinet- I think it was overused. There is, however, a great instrumental section with a nice zurna and duduk riff that I think coupled with some interesting choreography should make for a very entertaining performance.

Overall: It’s great! Of course it is, It’s our first entry into Eurovision and we all need to be united on this one.

-In other news : The Azerbaijani propaganda machine has once again been working overtime , and has written a letter of complaint to Eurovision: citing that André birthplace is “The Nagorno Karabagh Republic” - which according to Azeri’s doesn’t exist. Eurovision’s response was normal : “We are not a political organisation, we deal with music”

- Tv reports have been stating that perhaps this is a jealousy ploy on the part of Azerbaijan, as they did not fulfil entry requirements this year- but who knows. The important thing is that we all support André and make sure we vote in May, and who knows, maybe next year we could see Eurovision come to Yerevan. (we’ll have to fix the airport first!)

  1. song was good,it has the elements to win hearts in such a competition, the clip was good,i liked it,i just dont like the costume he wears and he seriously he needs a better shave and please leave that hat in yerevan.
if you look at the forums for eurovision you will see huge propaganda against armenia and turks are so active.well it will be interesting to see 2 neighbours points to each other.

  2. I am a big Andre fan, however, I think this song blows. We could and should have done much better.

  3. It does sound turkish. and the guy looks plain weird. yuck.

why couldn’t they put out something decent, like Aram Asatrian or Harout ?

    Comment by Tim — 3/16/2006 @ 9:16 pm

  4. come on!aram asatrian?harut?
    you must be kidding.
how about armenchik?or one of those diasporan singers?
i agree there there could be a better song but its not bad at all,it has good music and sure its not turkish, can u define turkish music?and what is armenian music?

  5. My first reaction was that it sounded like Turkish (or even kind of Uzbek) pop.

My cats didn’t like it, but I think that as far as pop music goes, eh, not too bad.

  6. This is much, much, much better than I ever anticipated.

This song is PERFECT for the Eurovision contest. Very good work by the Armenians!

I have heard some of the other songs from the other countries, and this ranks pretty well amongst them.

A good step forward for Armenian pop music, and for Armenia in general.

(BTW, I don’t think the incorrect grammar was too noticeable, as the song is fast and has lots going on.)

    Comment by Karnig — 3/17/2006 @ 9:47 am

  7. I’m telling you, its that clarinet lol.. It hardly ever gets used in Armenian pop music today, I don’t know why its in there now. It is good, but I’m just worried it is a bit too generic.

People I’ve played it to really like it though.

    Comment by Harmick — 3/17/2006 @ 2:36 pm

  8. I’d never heard of Andre before this week and he’s not half bad. I agree the song could be better but remember Eurovision appeals to the lowest common denomiator so they’ve picked the perfect song to appeal to the widest audience & I do love the instrumental bit in the middle. Of course the lyrics suck and the guy’s pronounciation leaves a lot to be desired and it doesn’t sound typically armenia but like I said this is what will appeal to the euro audience!

    Comment by Anna — 3/17/2006 @ 9:36 pm

  9. I was pleasantly surprised. I thought it would look a lot more ghetto and low budget. It falls in line with other Eurovision presentations.

    Liked:
    *Clean presentation of video
    *Sort of sexy, romantic theme
*Injection of Duduk. (Always nice and classy.)

    Didn’t like:
*The Turkish/Anatolian bouzouki thing going on as I don’t like it in some Greek music. (We should be shedding these kinds of elements from our culture not incorporating them. It generally didn’t sound European enough.)
*He’s really got to trim that mono-brow.

    Overall I’m happy with it.

  10. aram asatryan or harout?

hahahaha! Would you really want Armenia to be humiliated in front of Europe? This is Eurovision.

I think the only bad thing about the song is that the chorus is a bit repetitive near the end, but it only feels repetitive after listening to it a few times.

I don’t see a problem with his accent. His accent sounds worse in other songs that he has done. It sounds fine in this song. I don’t know if the lyrics suck either because I’ve seen worse lyrics, not that many people care about the lyrics in Eurovision. I don’t see anything wrong with his appearance in that video either.

Like i said, the only bad thing about it is that it is a bit repetitive and people might want a change in music style this year. But i doubt that. This should come in the top 10 or top 5. I don’t see why not compared to how crap most of the other songs are. I also think that his performance will outdo the song too.

  11. Very creative work. Not my taste exactly. But I’m in my forties. I’m sure the younger generation will love this song. The bottom line: It was very enjoyable even though it was not a masterpiece. I was not compelled to stop the song. Andre, whoever he is, has a promising future.

  12. Anna you are absolutely correct! My flatmates here are bouncing around singing “without your love”, i think we may well be on to a hit.

  13. u can listen to all the songs here:
    http://www.keithm.utvinternet.ie/Athens2006media.htm

I’ve only listened to around 3/4 of them, but I can definitely see Armenia winning the whole thing or at least coming in the top 5 or 10. The only other song which sounds quite good is Belgium. But the style of Armenia’s will appeal to more people.

    Comment by qwerty — 3/19/2006 @ 4:21 am

  14. What a dreadful song. True, it does sound like a generic oriental pop contraption - could be Turkish or Egyptian or Lebanese. Who cares about Eurovision, anyway? Some Eurotrash gathering once a year to compete with the worst they could come up with - both in terms of songs and performers. I do tune in occasionally, just to have a good laugh.

    Comment by garen — 3/20/2006 @ 1:46 pm

  15. This song sounds way too Turkish. From some of the melody structures and with the vocals. Come on man I know the Armenia pop scene can come up with a better / more unique identity. But I like the video!

  16. Armen: turkish music is like porn, hard to define but you know what it is when you look at it, or hear it as in this case. This was a turkish song performed in armenian by a weird looking guy for some eurovision thingy that I never heard of.

People who look down on Harout or Aram Asatrian should probably give it a second chance. I just drove from FL to MA listening to nothing but Harout and rabiz. True, he does have a lot of junk but he also has some real gems.

    Comment by Tim — 3/21/2006 @ 8:40 am

  17. I don’t think anyone is looking down at people like Aram or Harout. You just have to understand that this is a European contest, not an Armenian one. Times have changed. That’s all I need to say. If Armenia is looking to win, do you really think they are going to put someone like Harout or Aram? Don’t make me crack up!

Anyway, as someone else said, Eurovision is a load of crap, but that’s not the point. If Armenia wins or does well, then it will get a big boost in recognition around the world because believe it or not, there are people that have not even heard of Armenia and if they won, it will also bring extra tourism etc… So for anyone to say that its a stupid competition anyway, think again about the benefits that it can bring.

I still think the song is good and this coming from a person who mainly listens to hard rock/metal!!!

And if you think the song sounds turkish, then good, because at least its got a better chance of winning!

  18. I’m a huge fan of Andre. I think he performed very well there and also liked the choreography done.

    Comment by ethan — 3/22/2006 @ 4:45 pm

  19. Harut? Aram Asatryan? Armenchik? Have you watched Harut by Request on Channel 55??? Its fun to dance to and Harut has done his share– but he’s not the Eurovision type or style. And as for the rest of the diasporan singers…it works in LA, but I don’t think it works at Eurovision.

Personally, I’ve never heard of Andre..the song is more than I expected. The eyebrows need some work (I”m a glendale chick after all). And I have to admit…you can bop to the song and that’s what counts.

    Comment by GlendaleChick — 3/23/2006 @ 10:12 am

  20. Hi to everyone!guys, Andre is great! he has an excellent voice, though it’s not so obviously seen in this song. The repetitions in the song are for the better.. it’ easy to remember and sing. I admire him, and to my mind he looks nice and he is strong on the stage, he performs pretty good… u should see him dance…

    Comment by liana — 3/23/2006 @ 12:59 pm

  21. For those criticizing Andre’s song and performance, have you seen the competition? After watching about half a dozen videos, I had to stop; it was too painful to continue. Turkey’s song was pathetic; so was Greece, Norway, and France. Belgium was tolerable, I suppose. Sweden wasn’t bad, and the performer quite attractive. When measured against this crap, Andre’s song is pretty darn good; and definitely has a lot of unique elements that sets it apart from the crowd. I agree, though, that he looks kinda freaky and needs to lose the unibrow.

    Comment by phantom — 3/23/2006 @ 1:16 pm

  22. The unibrow is probably André’s most distguishable physical feature, I think if he got rid of it now, the whole country would know and it would ruin his image- which is already not too great in the eyes of many Armenian males lol. Nevertheless it would be nice if he could get rid of it, but it would be too obvious!

    Comment by Harmick — 3/23/2006 @ 3:19 pm

  23. GlendaleChick, Phantom….

at least them 2 people understand!

    Comment by qwerty — 3/24/2006 @ 2:42 am

  24. Harmick hit the nail right on the head about the unibrow. Those Armenian males including myself who are cursed with the unibrow and who come to a point when they want to just get rid of it face a lot of ridicule, although it eventually goes away. As for the song i like it, I dont know why everyone expects Andre to lose his accent immediately for Eurovision, this is not a switch you flip. And plus accents are sexy, i wish i still had mine.
As for the competition, I enjoyed Kate Ryan’s Je t’adore(Belgium), and Bloody Mary by Las Ketchup (Spain). Everything else ive heard so far sounds horrible, especially Greece and Turkey.

    Comment by Tigran — 3/24/2006 @ 5:24 am

  25. Well it was either gonna be Andre or the sisters Anush and Inga heading to the competition, but I think H1 made the right choice.

I thought his cornrolls at the last National Music Awards was a little “wack”, but compare him to our other pop stars and he really does stand out quite a bit … he’s got style, he’s got presence on stage, and if anyone’s seen Eurovision before you’ll realize that his pop track is very similar to the songs that have won for the past 2-3 years.

Re. the unibrow … like Harmick said, getting rid of it now will only ruin his image, especially in Armenia. Sadly, I’ve heard so many people in Armenia say, “Look at that guy, he’s plucked his eyebrows, he’s definitely gay.” Man oh man, what percentage of diaspora Armenian men don’t pluck or wax their eyebrows? I’m curious to know.

In any case, if Andre puts together a good show, I think we honestly have a good chance to be in the top 5. And for our first year, that would be an awesome achievement. My points go out to Bosnia and Croatia first … followed by Armenia. ;-)

    Comment by Der Hova — 3/24/2006 @ 9:57 am

  26. It seems opposition politicians are using the Eurovision song as a means of digging at the authorities

    Groong:
“Victor Dallakian, secretary of “Justice” faction, stated
that the song of Andre is chosen to match the taste of the Armenian
authorities that prefer listening to Arabic tunes during their
    parties.

Interesting, someone mentioned it sounded Mongolian.

In response to this Haylur just ran a huge report with Thomas Pogoshyan - prominent singer - saying that the song indeed was as Armenian as you can get.

I’m not sure. Interesting though, apparently Armenia is in a prelimary leading position. Not sure where they got their data from though..it is H1 after all.

    Comment by Harmick — 3/26/2006 @ 3:22 am

  27. it’s because of this type of attitude why Armenia never gets anywhere in anything. For once, Armenia has produced something which will appeal to your typical European person and yet Armenians are still complaining about it!

I really wish they wouldnt keep bringing politics into this

    Comment by Harmick — 3/29/2006 @ 7:07 pm

  30. I wasn’t at all surprised at the attitude Azerbaijan shows.. it’s typical of their nation… jealousy… that’s all.
What about the accent, i don’t think he’ s got a strong one, even if it’s so , many world-known artists and singers still have slight accent, and it isn’t an obstacle for them.
I support our singer and have no doubt about his success…

    Comment by liana — 3/30/2006 @ 11:43 am

  31. If this hasn’t already been pointed out about Andre’s new song, I would like to say that the one truly armenian part is the part in which the traditional Kochar dance is featured. It is the part which he is not singing and it’s like the break section. I don’t know how to explain it. Other than that, well…

    Comment by Tamar Palandjian — 3/30/2006 @ 5:22 pm

  32. According to http://www.armradio.am/news/?part=pol&id=5353

“Head of the Parliamentary majority Galust Sahakyan, referring to his musical education, characterized Andre’s “Without Your Love” song as Tatar-Mongolian. In response to this, President of the Council of Public Radio and Television Company of Armenia Alexan Harutyunyan told “Radiolur” correspondent Anush Dashtents, “I am very glad that the NA Deputies have got interested in the projects of the Public Radio and Television Company. As for Galust Sahakyan, whom I respect very much, I don’t know what instrument he plays, but I can say that those who have such an opinion should consider that the whole ashug culture is Mongolian or Uzbek as well.”
According to Alexan Harutyunyan, tastes and opinions differ. He notes, however, that even if they do not like Andre’s song they should not “break” the singer before the start of the contest. It is like declaring to the soldier departing for war that they are weak or they cannot fight, or that they will have to desert.”

    Completely agree with Alexan Harutyunyan.

Dont worry , though, I’ll be uploading the whole debate online for you all to watch :)

  41. People I dont get you. How the hell are you calling this a Tukish song. First of all Turkey stole its “music” from the same neighbors that it raped and murdered for centuries. Second some of you guys dont even know what instruments are used. Canon is used extensively and I beleive kamanch is used too, zurna of course for the cochari section, duduk. All in all they are either pure Armenian or local. You have to understand that Armenia is very uique we are a Europe in East and East in Europe so we have to act accordingly and this song reflects it.
Hey its not perfect, but what is? We are given a great chance to show us in the world and some wannabees just talk shit.
And his accent well thats what Eurovision wants DIFFERENT flavors, if they wanted a clean white boy accnt they would make it a requirement.

WE should support our country to its fullest and concentrate our energy to make sure that we win.

  45. After watching Sunday’s brodcast, I decided to do a little research on the Eurovision contest and I’m glad to have found this site. I just wanted to say that nothing is or will ever be perfect, so PLEASE stop passing judgements on one lame thing or another. For once, let’s stop the useless talk… which we so much love, and just embrace the fact that for the 1st time we are participating in this competition. If we don’t support our own, who else will? Andre needs to represent our country with confidence and pride, and not with the mindset that us Armos love to hate on one another. As for the song, it’s one of the best: it’s up beat and catchy, has I think 8 Armenian instruments used, and is very pop…just what Eurovision is looking for.

    Comment by dro — 4/4/2006 @ 11:07 am

  48. Greetings from London.

I for one think our first entry in the ESC is quite good. I love the instrumentation and, frankly, it is as Armenian as madzoon! Love the zurna and the duduk and the oud! Love the faux-Paradjanov video. All in all well done to all involved in the first Armo entry. The lyrics are not really ‘English’ but I suggest everyone listen to the Lithuanian and Icelandic lyrics. I think all will depend on the stage presentation. Andre if you are reading this concentrate on the camerawork. Use it to maximum effect. This from someone who has not missed one ESC in 30 years! And hachoghootioon!

Secondly what is this obsession with purifying ‘Armenian music’? Who decides what stays and what is discarded? An Armenian music Taliban? Please grow up Armos! So much Turkish music has an Armenian accent. We have both given and taken from one another. Our music does have similarities with Kurdish and Turkish music. So what? Gomidas hated the zurna and considered it ‘odar’ and vulgar! How many people today would insist that it was removed from the Armenian repertoire? Rather than ‘purifying’ our diverse, rich cultural heritage we should be celebrating it. So what if people think it sounds Turkish? I always think many Turkish songs sound Armenian. Let us enjoy both and not drag politics into this. And for the record a Turkish friend of mine will be waving an Armenian flag in the Hall in Athens on the night.

    Comment by Vasken — 4/4/2006 @ 2:15 pm

  49. People grow up. There is nothing wrong with this song. It represents Armenian culture in so many ways that no other singer has represented it before in their music videos. As it was mentioned above this is the reason why we are not recognized. You must be very PARAP to sit and talk about this song in Azgayin Joxov. Stop the discrimination and enjoy the song.

I’m 20 years old too, and I can honestly say that if I was about to go and perform for the FIRST time in Eurovision , in front of 60 million people - I’d be utterly ashamed and hurt to read such a comment.

  56. For God’s sake, how could one call the song of the Greek representative ‘horrible’ while referring to that (indeed) Mongolian-like (backward at all rates) nonsense of our lad agreeable. What a disgrace! But then again, the population of Armenia has never failed disgracing itself in matters of culture: this comes from someone who involuntarily spent the first 20 years of his life in that rotting pot. You know, there are obvious qualities that distinguish Aznavour from that Aram whatever-yan or whatever-chik or har-whatever-ouk, or Baroque Music from that perfectly primitive Armenian, Turkish, Persian, Afghan, African or Arab nonsense, and the song in question fails to make an exception to the rule. Not to be too harsh, how could one take the slightest measure of pride or any enjoyment in that plebeian rubbish! It shows clearly that a great number of Armenians abroad is as undercivilised and tasteless as the vast majority of Armenia’s population. As for me, I liked the Greek song as well as those of the Northern nations better beyond comparison (honestly, I hardly ever listen to anything other than Classical Music (most particularly, Baroque), but a good modern song I certainly should be able to distinguish from a bad one).
As for the lad’s unibrow, well… it says something about the state of the culture in question, if even a popstar performing in Europe for hundreds of thousands must avoid getting rid of the eccessive hair growth above his nose out of fear of persecution (persecution on the grounds of one’s endeavour to look his best!). In fact, I find it curious enough that he hasn’t been lynched for growing his hair in Armenia. Well done, young man!

One thing which amazes me is the extent of love towards anything closely or remotely reminding monsters and devils… I would appreciate if someone could share his/her thoughts on such reasons. It was also interesting to see Turkey giving high votes to Armenia… however, considering the Armenian approach in preparing for this contest I assume next year we will have some Armenian devils and monsters in Finland…
