Nakhichevan Destruction Update

Filed under: Armenia, Culture, Society, Neighbors, Azerbaijan — Posted by Hovakim on January 30th

Here’s an interesting report on the ongoing destruction of the Armenian heritage in Nakhichevan (parts of this appeared in ArmeniaNow.com last year, I think).

Here’s an excerpt of a conversation the author had with the Nakhichevan law enforcement in September 2005:

They asked me why I thought that there was a church in Shorut.
“Because a book had told me”, I said.
“It is wrong, it is lying to you. It is an Armenian book, yes?”
“Yes” I replied.
“You see, Armenians are always lying – they are lying to everyone”.
I couldn’t resist pointing out to them that there were photographs of the Shurut church in the book. To
this they responded by saying “Armenians, they came here and took photographs of Shurut village and
then they went back to Armenia and put into them photographs of a church in Armenia.”
“It is all just Armenian lies. They are lying to you! There never were any Armenian churches anywhere
in Naxçivan. There were no Armenians ever living here - so how could there have been churches here?
There never was a church in Abrakunis, there never was a church in Shurut, there never was a church
in Julfa!”

  1. What I wonder always is are there any ordinary Azeris or Turks (or is it only Pamuk?) who realize how much harm they do to themselves, their children, their future generations by so viciously planting false self identity and distorted image of neighbors?

  4. I’ve been battling on the Nakhichevan entry of wikipedia for a clean and honest interpretation of what’s gone on there in the past, and what’s going on there now. I need backup!!!

  6. Does Nakhichevan have a meaning in Azeri? It sure as hell does in Armenian!

  7. Yes, it has meaning in Azerbaijani. It means place from where came Noah (Nuh- in Azerbaijani). It is just two words in Naxçivan word.
And I am sorrz, but as a man from Nakhchivan (see real way of writing this word) I could just laugh on web page and story that published here. :) It is simply not from Nakhchivan. First of all there are many untrue information about places (because for example Norashen (?) in Babek district and may others.
And one more Juga. that was told is not a town , it is a small willage (real name - GULUSTAN) in 7 kilometers of Djulfa city :)
And one more - the name and story that someone went in January in Akulis (Aylis- real name) impossible. Because there are 3 different villages in the same district, and it is full of snow the way.
I am sorry, but I want to understand for which reason Armenian write this story at home, and published in internet… and wrote ENGLISH sign …. :)

  8. Naxichevan has never belonged to Azeris, it has always been Armenian land. My grandfather was born there and there lived lots of Armenians. I was, myself, there, when I was a child, I remeber the days.
Dear Emin, be calm, good-willed, we are all humans. I don’t think occupying the land or organizing anit-Armenian propaganda (…genocide…our sad part) will do good. And there is a historic map on which everyone can see how great Armenia was.
We are all people and we should live in peace. Lets live in peace.
