Levon Aronian: Winner of World Chess Cup 2005
Levon Aronian won the World Chess Cup 2005, being held at Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia (see an earlier report ). Although he was regarded as a favorite throughout the tournament, his opponents were of no less strength. For Mr. Aronian, this was perhaps the biggest international tournament up-to-date, and he performed very well. You can read interviews and replay the games by visiting the official site (there are also plenty of photos to enjoy).
This is a great day for chess, and even a greater one for the Armenian chess. Congratulations to all of us.

What does this mean? How many chess cups are out there - is this FIDE chess cup or what?

This was a FIDE event. It was to replace last year’s World Championship, which was heavily criticized for being called that; so, as far as I understand, FIDE kept the format (knock-out) and changed the name. World’s strongest 128 chess players were participating in this tournament (granted, some of the biggest names didn’t show up) and those players that won 1-6th in this tournament, position automatically are eligible for World Championship 2007.
So to recap, this was a FIDE event; there are no other World Cups but I wouldn’t call Levon Aronian World champion in chess, since currently the title is in the hands of Topalov (maybe if Levon plays in 2007 and wins, he will become the world champion).
In any event, this was a major tournament and will be talked about for time to come.

Cool. I wish Kasparov had not messed up the chess championship system with his rogue attitude (although FIDE is not an angel either).

Just saw Levon Aronian on H1 - looked very nice and decent (in fact, the first decent and honest face I have seen on Hailur in a very long while). The announcer, of course, asked some really asinine questions, like what he’s going to do with the $100,000 he won (will call a family council to decide), and since he lives in Germany, whether he will take the World Cup Trophy to Germany or leave it in Armenia (Actually, Levon said he donated it to the Khanty Mansiisk Armenian community who showed up in force every single day to support him.)

Hovakim, I’m guessing they only show government officials on Hailur

no, sometimes also opposition politicians, self-proclaimed intellectuals, and businessmen

There were some nice after the event news.
1. There was a local Armenian community who rendered a continuing support to Levon.
2. In acknowledgment of that support he left the Cup trophey to that community.
3. Armenian government awarded a cash prize to Levon. From the first sight it might seem unsignificant, sinse the Cup prize was 100,000 and the government award was 1/10 of that. However it is nice that soviet mentality didn’t prevail (kind of he got already enough, lets take some of it away) and I assume it is nice feeling to Levon and rest of the sportsmen that representation of Armenia in the international events can be rewarding.
