An Interview with Hovhannes Kourghinyan
Hovhannes Kourghinyan is better known as the lead singer of Vostan Hayots, one of the most popular Armenian rock bands of recent years. Considered to be representative of what has become known as the “third wave of Armenian rock,” Vostan Hayots successfully fused national influences with a progressive rock sound. Today, Kourghinyan performs with a new band, “Army of God,” in his “Downtown” club situated in central Yerevan.
This interview is one in an occasional series of interviews that will form the basis for an article on the contemporary rock scene in the Republic of Armenia.

It’s probably working now. Thing is that Arminco now automatically mirrors sites hosted in Armenia in the US which is good because things are faster for people not accessing from here. However, it takes anywhere between an hour to three or more before it does and of course, as I’m here it’s difficult for me to know when the mirroring schedule kicks in.

Հիանալի հարցազրույց էր։ Հարցերը եւ զրույցը ընդանհրապես, շատ հետաքրքիր էին։ Իմ կարծիքով ընկեր Հովհաննեսը ճիշտ է նկատել, որ հայերը չեն սիրում նորարարություն։ Ինչպես ասում են Հեծանիվ հնարել պետք չէ, այն արդեն կա։ Սակայն ցավոք դա հայկական իրականություն է։ Ասեմ նաեւ որ ես էլ նույնպես համակաչծիք եմ Հայ Քրիստոնեա մտքի հետ։

It was a great interview. I think that comrade Hovhannes is right about this “When someone does something here they don’t ask themselves if it’s good or bad. People instead declare themselves to be geniuses even though I know that many of these performers will be gone in the next two years. Nobody will remember them.” I also agree with the theory of [Armenian] Christianity.
